I've paired it with an Apple Magic Keyboard that I already had which makes it feel very laptop-y. I already am an iCloud Drive user (2TB) so a lot of data lives up in the cloud. So, I ended up getting a 12.9' iPad Pro with 256GB of storage. I was stoked to hear that because using the touch interface for Fortnite and Minecraft is, frankly, awful. Thankfully, all of these are available on iPad and beginning in iPadOS 13 (coming the end of this month) I'll be able to use a normal XBox or Playstation controller with the iPad. I like Civilization, Minecraft, Fortnite and a couple of others. Gaming - I'm what you'd call a casual gamer.

I won't get into our entire recording setup because it goes down a rathole not many folks are going to be interested in, but if you are interested, hit me up and I'll lay it out. MacStories (run by Viticci) did a write up on how they use Ferrite and my method isn't far off. We both use Garageband to record but I use Ferrite Recording Studio to edit since it doesn't do multi-track recording. Dad then sends me his audio track and I put it all together. So instead, now both Dad and I record on each end of the conversation. With Zoom, I sounded great because I was recorded locally, but Dad's audio quality was capped via the Zoom recording. Finally I decided to bite the bullet and turn the podcast into what's called a 'double ended' podcast. Unfortunately, local recordings are on Mac/Windows only and Zoom's cloud recordings don't split speakers into separate tracks. I experimented with using Discord and a recording bot, but that was clunky and the audio quality was awful. Super simple and dad (also on an iPad) didn't have to do much from a tech perspective. This was perfect because then I could just drop dad's file into a separate track in Garageband. If you do a local recording on Zoom you have the option to split each speaker into separate audio files.

The way we did it when I had the Mac was that we'd join a Zoom conference. For me, my dad also joins me on the podcast and he's 2 hours away in Maine so we do it remotely. It's pretty straightforward if you're doing a podcast solo. Podcasting - This was the big question mark.I only have it for my podcast's page and really I don't have many folks finding the podcast from Facebook anyway so I may end up killing the Facebook page and ditching it. Facebook is installed but I haven't fired it up. (Personal and podcast accounts.) Instagram isn't for iPad, but it's more iPhone centric anyway so no worries there. Works just fine with my multiple accounts. Social Media - The Twitter app could be better on iPad, but it's functional.VLC has an awesome iOS app (tvOS too) so that's good, but the whole internet trucking operation. That was a problem I'd have to solve. I do, however, utilize VLC for playing various video formats that, uh, 'fall off the back of internet trucks' if you catch my drift. Media streaming - Obviously there are apps for Netflix, HBO etc on iPad so that was never a concern.iCab in particular is great with downloading files that Safari doesn't quite know what to do with - zips, tarballs etc. There's also Chrome, Firefox, and even iCab (that name's a blast from the past for long-time Apple folk) available. Content blockers work on it as well so I get all my ad/script blocking too.

Safari is great on iPad and in the forthcoming iPadOS (iOS 13, really) it will get the full desktop version.

Web stuff - Honestly a lot of what I personally do is web-based.So just what does my setup look like? Well first let's look at what I actually do. The wife called dibs on the display months ago and my son's loving that he's got a new-to-him Mac. This week I finally moved the last vestiges of data on my Mac Mini up to iCloud Drive and on my desk no longer sits a Mac Mini and Thunderbolt Display. It really got me thinking: What in my life couldn't I do on an iPad? Was there anything holding me back? Turns out that after some time of analyzing just what I was doing on my Mac Mini the answer was, 'Not really!' It's bananas. (Oh, I should mention that he's made a full recovery, btw.) He's figured out some crazy integrations powered by a lot of automation.

He runs an Apple-centric news website, hosts podcasts, is a boss. Given that he was spending a lot of time in the hospital, it turned out the iPad was best situated for his needs. When he was stricken by cancer, he ended up switching from a Mac full time to an iPad full time.
